Much of what makes soil work is biological, and a shelf-stable bag that has been sitting in a hot parking lot has lost a good deal of it. Local compost is alive when it reaches you because it has not traveled or waited. The tradeoff is variation between batches.

Where it comes from

Everything here started as material that a kitchen, café, or farm set aside. Some of it also becomes mushroom substrate. If you have an organic stream of your own that is currently going to a landfill, that is a pickup rather than a purchase.
